Deer Hunted is a bog wood sculpture that remembers an older Ireland and the great animals that once moved through its ancient landscape. The Irish elk, or giant deer, disappeared from Ireland around the end of the last Ice Age, leaving only bones and memory behind. Dark and elemental, the Discovery pays homage to those vanished creatures, carrying something of the ghost of the giants that came before us. A statement sculpture about extinction and deep time, Deer Hunted evokes a feeling of the fragility of wildlife.
Inspiration & Notes
This piece reminds me of the Giant elk or a majestic stag, Valient.
