Moloch takes its name from the ancient and contested figure associated with sacrifice, fire and forbidden worship. There is also a famous literary image in John Milton's Paradise Lost, where Moloch appears as a fallen angel advocating open war. Formed from two twisted pieces of Scots pine and crudely bound together with rusted iron, the figure seems less constructed than wrenched into being. Fire has blackened and scarred its surface, while the contorted grain, fractures and cavities suggest something caught, something screaming.

Inspiration & Notes

There is something deliberately unresolved about Moloch. It can be read as an idol, a burnt relic, a figure in torment, or simply an accident of timber upon which the human mind has imposed a face. Whatever it is, it does not appear at peace.

Moloch is an ancient name associated with a disturbing form of sacrifice in the Hebrew Bible, particularly the sacrifice of children by fire.
